Volunteering is about giving your time to do something useful, without getting paid. In return you get the satisfaction of time and effort well spent. During the cold Moscow winters it is a reason to leave your house and in the process you can meet new people, learn new skills and gain useful experience.
The current members of the IWC Charities Board joined for 3 reasons and for everyone the mix is different:
- A chance to contribute to a cause
- An opportunity to meet new people and have fun in doing things together
- The possibility of developing or even DISCOVERING new skills
It is important to choose what suits you and we definitely want to help you with that process. Catherine ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) can tell you everything about volunteering in general and the open positions, Connie and Daria can inform you how IWC Charities has helped groups of individuals. For them the chance to contribute to a cause is probably dominant among the reasons they chose to contribute to the IWC Charities work and if that is what you go for, we suggest you to talk to them.
Christine, Sue, Mariska and Laura and the rest of the team run the Donations Office. As a volunteer in the Donations Office you become a member of the team and you meet representatives of the charities supported by IWC. If meeting new people (and making friends) is your main aim among the 3 these are the ladies to talk to . You can contact them at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. If you want direct contact with various projects that received donations from IWC you can become a (lead) coordinator like Dessi, Laura, Karina and Victoria. To find the right balance in professional approach and care for the needy in the centres you visit is a challenge with every meeting. These roles require a lot of skills but they will give you insight into the life of people in Moscow you would otherwise never get. If your main aim is to discover and develop your skills, talking to them would be an option.
Ania and Lidy ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. For our group it is important to make sure that donations generated by the expat community reach their destinations in a transparent and effective way in line with the IWC mission. As a team we make sure that on top of that we create a pleasant environment to work in. From our own experience we can tell you that if you become a member of the group of ladies who work together in the Charities Board it will be a rewarding task. We hope to hear from many of you .
We regularly publish vacancies in our project teams for you to get involved as Project Coordinator or Volunteer.
- Project Coordinators receive funds from the Lead Coordinator and distribute those to the project. They visit project sites and monitor them on a regular basis (at least once a month)
- They report back to the Lead Coordinator if there are any requests/questions/problems related to the project
- They fill in application forms from the project (prolongation report once a year plus any special requests)
- Volunteers are very welcome in projects like Day Care Centers and Orphanages, Soup Kitchens and related projects, such as a Medical Clinic, which always welcomes volunteers with a medical background. Furthermore some of the supported Charities could always use the help of English teachers, nurses and people with a pedagogical background. In some cases command of the Russian language is a must, but it is not always necessary for volunteers to be able to speak Russian.

Read on for some thoughts from a few of our charity volunteers:
Lidy Grisel, Co-Chair Charities 2011 – 2012
In every country I have lived in I joined a committee because I like to work in groups with members of various nationalities. For me it brings the challenge to develop strategies to give every member a chance to make a contribution in her own way in line with the dynamics of the team. Especially in international groups that is not always easy but it is fun and it gives me much more insight into different cultures than I would have had otherwise; a great bonus of expat life!
Sue Ward, member of the Donations Office team
The reason I joined the IWC DO Coordinating Team was to work with some lovely people and to feel that I was contributing something back into the Moscow community. I am so pleased I did because it has been so much fun to be part of a proactive team.
Christine Claeye, member of the Donations Office team
I joined the Charity board in November 2010 because I wanted to meet people, have fun and at the same time contribute to help poor people in Russia.
Wants to make a useful contribution to Russian society and get closer to its citizens.
