Batik: the art of painting on silk. Beginners
Batik is a generic name for a variety of ways to hand-paint fabrics. The birthplace of batik is the island of Java in Indonesia, where to this day clothes from fabrics, hand-painted, are very popular. Traditional Javanese Batik art - not just painting on cloth - is and was considered sacred and was used as a talisman. This ancient and amazingly diverse art now takes its rightful place among other forms of decorative art. This technique is not difficult and is suitable for people without drawing experience. I give all the necessary information for those wishing to learn the technique of painting on silk, a lot of useful tips from a professional in batik painting. In the beginners group we will make paintings and scarves.

Fashion and Dressmaking
Irina Ivanova has taught fashion and design for many years in colleges in Moscow and abroad. She will take you through the step by step process of designing an item of clothing through to its completion. The first class will focus on designing a simple garment i.e. a skirt. 1st stage: fashion design and drawing using haute couture as inspiration, 2nd stage: fabrics, colors and style, working from a mannequin, 3rd stage: visits to fabric shop, 4th stage: making the garment.

Painting: Bring out the Artist in You
A great starter course, where your tutor paints with you. You learn which professional art materials to use, (acrylics, pencil, later oils), how to use your brushes, how to paint in different techniques, simple composition, perspective, - all to create a great product.
You start "thinking like an Artist" on this course. After you know how to paint you learn to develop your own style. We learn how the masters painted; we understand "concepts", missions and mood boards. Your teacher Anna Schipper-Cherkasova is a Professional artist (graduated from Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts) and helps you to create your works in easy and enjoyable way - that is with patience, enthusiasm, encouragement and professionalism. Group up to 10 people, easels and basic materials are provided (depends on number of people). Wednesday's classes will be held at a local activity centre and Thursday's classes will be held at the Bobroussova-Davies gallery.

Painting: Oil / Acrylic
The oil/acrylic painting class is for students who want to learn how to paint and techniques to enhance painting skills. All levels are welcome. Class space is limited due to studio size and allowing time with instructor.

Russian Icon Painting
Icons are painted in a very traditional way. There are 21 steps, each with a special meaning.The first icon is either Archangel Michael (mediator between heaven and earth) or Emmanuel (Jesus as a young man). On a board with white gesso you trace and then etch the outline of the angel. Then apply ceramic on the sides, gold leaf and red outline for the halo, sankir for skin, colors: several layers (first texture, then transparent layer, graphic etc). Paints are made from ground rock and a mixture of egg yolk. One icon takes about 12 sessions.

Scrapbooking and Paper Fun

Cost: No costs at all for supplies (e.g. stamps, inks, punches, cutters, pens...). People can bring their own photo albums and papers, but the Leader can also provide you with any material needed and will charge upon request, with a list of shops where you can buy your own materials in Moscow.

Sculpture
Usually, the first piece you will take on is to copy an antique torso or Aphrodite’s head, to get used to making shape and understanding volume and symmetry. All tools and equipment are provided at the atelier, including glaze and plasticine, to create models, which are then turned into terracotta (raw or glazed), plaster or bronze pieces. You will learn about and use the century–old techniques developed by the grand masters and guided by Vadim you will either copy a known art-work or find your inner artist and get creative. You can be certain to enjoy the process as much as the results! Most students learn from each other too and Vadim has a library of art books to get you inspired.

Watercolours & multimedia painting group
Our instructor, Elena Andreevna Afanasieva, has been teaching children and adults for over 40 years. She holds the title “Master Instructor” at the Serov School of Art. Weather permitting, we move outdoors, painting in and around Moscow, doing landscapes, architecture and street scenes. During the cold months, we paint indoors, using still lives, live models and photos as reference. Elena’s approach is for each student to develop their own style, rather than applying strict rules. Of course, formal instruction is given and each student will be helped individually as well. Other mediums such as pastel, gouache and charcoal are encouraged. Bones for Life
Reinforce your skeleton through intelligent movement. Make simple, but unusual movements that coordinate the whole body in a harmonious way. Literary Ladies
This group is an informal gathering of women to discuss the literature they are currently reading. We meet in centrally located cafes and you will be informed of the venue via email prior to the meeting each month. Members can bring along a murder mystery novel, home decorating magazine article, newspaper clipping, delicious recipe, medical journal or any other literature that they think is worth sharing. The juicier, the better! This club is really for those people who love to read, and are happy to share their great or not so great findings with others. Just to make things a little more interesting, the leader of the group recommends one piece of literature each month to the members. If members have a chance to read it, great – it can be discussed!!! If not, no stress!!! Come along, relax and get ready to hopefully have a laugh!

Cooking, wining & dining
Cooking Club
All participants must be willing to host a gathering whether it is at home or at another location. The hostess decides how many guests she can accommodate and which 3 or 4 courses the group will cook. She will need to buy everything to prepare the lunch for the amount of participants she can host. A Cooking Club means cooking together so all recipes must be handed out on the day itself. When the food is prepared it is time to enjoy the lunch. Afterwards everyone needs to help cleaning up so the host doesn't end up with all the mess. It is a great social experience, a chance to share your favorite recipes with others. You will learn more about cooking in a very nice and private atmosphere and share the know-how about food, life and culture and can (will) create a self made recipe book controlled, cooked and taste-tested by you.

Indian Ayurvedic Cooking
Many non-Indians find it hard to make Indian dishes that taste like the real Indian kitchen. It’s a subtle and delicate play of vegetables and spices and method of cooking, something to be tried first hand under an expert. Ayurveda is an Indian ancient science of life and it details the correct and scientific method of cooking, combining food products etc. Ladies who would join our group should be ready for an exotic journey of various Indian regional cooking the Ayurvedic way!

Acting Workshop GROUP NOW FULL
We will focus on interpretation of scenes from selected plays. The workshop will be in English. We will choose together plays from the Russian, American, European and other repertoires. We will read and discuss the scenes. Afterwards, we will work out the scenes, advance the interpretation, and present our work. The main idea is to explore the work of an actress and actor, and learn how to discover theatre by studying the plays, the authors, and the characters through the art of acting and performing.

Architecture Walk and Explorer (with lunch) GROUP NOW FULL
Our group visits neighbourhoods of Moscow, places of interest and museums/galleries depending on the opportunity and weather conditions. The tours/visits are prepared by the members of the group with help of an existing ‘library’ of tours and places to visit. At the end of the tour we go for lunch. We take turns and each member or group of members organizes one or more tours each season. The decision of where to go and what to visit is made in an upfront meeting at the beginning of the new season, which means twice a year: September & January/February. I would like to change the concept of the Architecture group to an Explorer group and a ‘library’ available to all members.

Architecture Walk GROUP NOW FULL
The group comprises a core number of regular attendees from many different countries. The group leaders share the responsibility of drawing up a schedule of walks each season. The members of the group can use the great found of information, guide-books, brochures and texts about former walks to prepare the walks.
It has been a marvelous introduction to a city which although may not at first appear beautiful.

Museum Visits
We will visit all the best known and traditional museums and estates, but also for people who have seen most of the museums in Moscow is a chance to see something different. The number of places available is different for each visit, depending on the museum. There has to be a minimum number of participants so that the visit can take place.The museum groups work together with Galina Noskova, who is our guide and interpreter. Sometimes the museum will provide its own guide, sometimes in English, sometimes in Russian. In this case Galina acts as our interpreter.

Russian Art History
The aim of our one-year project is to give you the understanding of Russian Art and to show you the jewels of the Russian Culture you might miss otherwise.
You will discover the best museums and sights which are deprived of public popular attention but they are a must for the Russia art scene. Our course is a combination of lectures, tours to the best but mostly hidden or hard-to-get-into museums and architectural walks. You’ll have a unique opportunity to get first-hand experience in the Russian realist school of the second half of the 20th century based on the NB Gallery’s extensive realist collection.

Russian Drama-Reading and Theatre-going Group GROUP NOW FULL
This workshop aims at discovering theatre in Moscow, with a focus on Russian plays. According to the choices made by the teacher and the group’s participants, we will attend the performance of a play once a month, in Russian, in a Muscovite theatre. A week or two later, we will meet at teacher’s and leader’s home to discuss the play we saw. Meetings will be held in English, although, participants will read the play in the language of their choice before going to see the performance. We go together, as a group, to watch the performances.

Russian Film Group (advanced level Russian only) GROUP NOW FULL
Is your Russian language good enough to cope with everyday life? Are you bored with endless Russian lessons? Looking for a challenge? If you are interested in watching Russian films in Russian twice a month with a group of like-minded people to help close the gaps in your linguistic knowledge, this is for you. We watch all kind of Russian movies, from classics like “Brilliantovaya Ruka” to modern once like “Admiral”. Sometimes we go to the cinema if there is something good on.

Russian Literature Group 1
We read about 10 works of Russian Literature translated into English a year, decided upon by the members. Members host lunch at their home twice a year and must lead or co-lead a work’s presentation once a year. We meet from September to early June.

Russian Literature Group 2
The Russian literature group is lead by the very charismatic Felix from Patriarchy Dom tours. The book list is made up of Russian classics and more contemporary authors. Felix researches the authors and sets topics for the group to discuss. Felix studied Russian literature and is a great guide to this subject.

The Russian Literature and Theatre Group
Each month, we invite a modern Russian author or playwright/theatre person to talk about his/her work. Each theatre meeting is preceded by a visit to the theatre. The main emphasis of the Group’s activities is on literature, though we usually have 2-3 theatre meetings a season. We meet in the Museum at the Dom na Naberezhnoy. Members should be willing to read a book a month in Russian and have at least a passive knowledge of the language.

Theatre, Architecture, Interior Design: lectures, workshops, excursions
We will learn about the most famous Architectural styles of the world and illustrate them with excursions in Moscow distinguishing buildings of particular styles. Our group often has a chance to enter most unique places usually closed for general public, also visiting the unusual, as well as traditional theatres of Moscow, “ behind the screen”. This course is also handy for people interested in basic training of interior design art. The ability to organize space, to create mood and find style, - this kind of knowledge will be obtained during the study process. We will have workshops in design salons to train these skills.

Learn and Improve your English
This is a great chance to improve your English language skills in a group! The teaching method will focus on speaking, but also reading and writing will be trained. We will watch short study movies and sing songs to make it even more fun to improve your English. Materials will mainly be the latest versions from Oxford University Press but also from Ladybird, Longman, Penguin and other fine original English publish houses available in Moscow. Vocal and Piano Lessons
Pianist and singer Galina Staneshnikova is a senior teacher of the State Classical Academy by the name of Mimonid and senior teacher of the International Academy of Sciences and Arts. She offers lessons in vocal and piano playing.
Vocal: students have the possibility of studying singing solo. They will be able to get to learn more about Russian songs and romances.
Piano playing for children and adults: they will have lessons at their home. If necessary, the students will be assisted in purchasing or according a piano.
The students have a chance to take part in performances at festivals and competitions.

Cross Country Skiing
Commonly abbreviated XC skiing is a winter sport in which participants propel themselves across snow-covered terrain using skis and poles. Instruction will be provided by Zoya as well as stretching exercises before and after sessions.

Costs: participants need to provide own XC skiing equipment. Fee for teacher is 450 rubles per class.

Golf
Would you love to play golf in Moscow? We offer you a chance to do so. It will start at the end of May 2012. The exact starting date depends on the weather conditions in spring. More information will follow.
Nordic Walking
Nordic walking, originally known as ski walking, is a physical activity and a sport which consists of walking with poles similar to ski poles. Instruction will be provided by Zoya as well as stretching exercises before and after sessions.
Nearest metro: various as walks are held in different parks.
Costs: participants need to provide own Nordic Walking Sticks. Fee for teacher is 450 rubles per class.

Orienteering - Come experience the adventure of Orienteering!
Orienteering is a friendly sport that combines exercise with navigation. Participants use a detailed map to select routes and navigate through diverse terrain and visit control points in sequence. It's easy to learn and a fun way to exercise your body and mind! Starting Mid-April (according to the weather).
